How to close the sternum strap when wearing your child on your front in a soft-structured carrier

When we mention during our consults that the sternum strap (that clip on a full buckle carrier that connects both shoulder straps on your back when you are wearing your child on your front) should sit on about bra strap height in between your shoulder blades, lots of clients say that they find it difficult to close this buckle as they can’t reach it with their hands.

So we often get the question how to best close the sternum strap on a full buckle carrier without help. This is why we thought we would share this tip with you in our Tips Tuesday series this week.

Your carrier will feel more comfortable with the sternum strap between your shoulder blades. If the strap sits too high on your upper back there might be pressure on the back of your neck which could cause tension headaches. If the strap is too tight or too high the shoulder straps could sit too close to your neck and transfer weight onto your trapezius muscle. This muscle is not designed to bear weight and pressure in this area might cause tightness and trigger migranes.

Watch the chest clip video Liz has filmed so you can all wear the chest clip (sternum strap) low in the middle of your shoulder blades to avoid neck/back pain or tension headaches. We always use this method as it allows you the freedom to undo and clip by yourself when wearing your child. Other methods require the assistance of a second person to reclasp and, this is not really practical when you are wearing your child by yourself.
